Critically ill patients are often under sedation and mechanical ventilation, causing immobility and physiological changes that lead to rapid physical decline and disability. Patients experience physiological changes to the muscles and joints in ways that are difficult to reverse even with post-ICU rehabilitation, suggesting a critical role in the prevention of physical decline during the acute phase of critical illness. However, the clinical intensity of the acute phase of critical illness often limits the practical application of existing, labor-intensive therapies. To address these challenges, we developed an actuated multi-podus (AMP) boot to provide automated and high-frequency physical actuation to patients.
