Sonul Mehta, MD

Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, Director of the Division of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery

 
Sonul Mehta, MD is a clinical fellow of Penn Health-Tech.  Within Penn Medicine, Dr. Mehta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.  She serves as Director of the Division of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  Dr. Mehta is identified as 1 of 750 surgeons in the world with extensive sub-specialty training in oculofacial plastic surgery and is esteemed member of the prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).  She specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgeries involving the structures around the eyes including the eyelids, mid-face, tear duct, and orbit. Her clinical interests are in global health, eyelid cancers, trauma, aesthetics, and cutting-edge techniques for periocular reconstruction. She also has a strong interest in vision performance and sports ophthalmology.  To her, the craft of oculofacial surgery is both an art and science to protect and optimize vision and restore function and appearance. 
 
Dr. Mehta graduated summa cum laude from Villanova University’s 7-year-accelerated BS/MD program. She also studied at the University of Oxford and received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine.  She did her residency in ophthalmology at Georgetown University in Washington DC and completed her ASOPRS fellowship from the University of Toronto.  At Penn Medicine, she is strongly committed to excellent patient care, clinical research, and teaching. Her research interests include surgical innovation, medical education, health technology, and international ophthalmology.  As a native to the Philadelphia area, she is grateful to be able to give back to her own community, and volunteer internationally on surgical mission trips to developing countries. She truly enjoys collaborating with academicians, innovators, clinicians, engineers, and entrepreneurs to help advance clinical medicine to provide excellent patient care, enhance medical education, and increase access to healthcare in resource-limited settings.
